FULL DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT - DYSCALCULIA

Dyscalculia is a specific difficulty in understanding numbers which leads to a wide range of difficulties with mathematics. These include estimation, understanding quantity, performing calculations, counting and sequencing numbers. In addition direction and orientation  and understanding time and money can be a challenge. This means that everyday tasks such as managing money, using timetables, arriving at appointments on time etc can be very hard.

Maths difficulties are seen as a continuum with dyscalculia being at the most challenging end, affecting approximately 6% of the population. Many people experience maths difficulties including maths anxiety.

A diagnostic assessment is the only way that dyscalculia can be formally identified. This assessment will also provide a clearer picture of someone's cognitive profile and their strengths and weaknesses. This will help to ensure that any support put in place is as effective as possible for that individual.

If a diagnosis is given, if one is appropriate, it lasts throughout education and can be used as supporting evidence for school, college, examination concessions, and Disabled Students' Allowance (from Student Finance England).
